Banneret Fountain

The banner-wielding knight who stands proudly at the top of this fountain dates back to 1542 and is thought to be the work of the renowned Fribourg sculptor, Hans Gieng. Under the ancient regime, the bailiff and the bourgeois councillor were the chief administrators of the town. Dressed in battle armour, holding the banner of the town in one hand, and a shield in other, this knight is almost identical to the banneret on the Vennerbrunnen in Berne, which exerted a major influence on Payerne in the mid-16th century.
